From the start of September and throughout the school year, there are opportunities for students to receive quality liturgical training by joining either the Children’s Choir, the Youth Choir, and/or the Christmas Eve Family Choir and participating in the scheduled Sunday and special Liturgical Celebrations for their group.
A Few Reasons For Joining:
1. If God has blessed you with the gift of music, prayerfully consider using your gifts in church to give Him thanks and praise.
2. Who should join: All religious education students! It is a great service to your church community, deepens your spirituality through singing, and helps you become a better musician.
3. You will improve your music skills such as reading and understanding music and vocal production. There will also be opportunities for cantoring.
4. Music in Liturgical Celebrations holds a specific and important function - everything we sing points to the Gospel of the day, therefore we become messengers of the Word. Through singing sacred choral music, which ranges from the Middle Ages to today, we are in communion with all the composers throughout history. Have you ever wondered in what context some of the beautiful choral music was written while you were singing them? Through singing sacred music in the Liturgical setting we recognize the deep spirituality of the composers and become part of the living composition.
5. This activity would also qualify for community service hours (Scouting, National Honor Society) and would also be good for references needed for college applications and scholarships such as the annual St. Michael Parish MichaelMas Award.
